Golden Milk Latte

On a recent Facebook Live video I stepped a little out of my comfort zone and whipped up a Golden Milk Latte! I had never made anything live on Facebook before so I tried to get prepared and hoped for the best!

Below is a synopsis of the Live Video with a link to check out the video too! I’ve also included the recipe so be sure to make your own Golden Milk Latte and let me know how it is!

Enjoy!

Today, as you know, I am going to be making a Golden Milk Latte LIVE on Facebook! I have never made anything live on Facebook before so I tried to get prepared and hopefully it doesn’t go too poorly!

If you don’t know me or if you’re new to seeing me on social media, my name is Erin Wiebe. I’m a naturopathic doctor and I’m also the creator of a 4-week online wellness program for moms called Ignite Your Purpose. I designed this program specifically to help moms master the fundamentals of health so that they can regain their energy to be the moms that they want to be, and to have energy left over to live their purpose.

Let’s start with the benefits of Turmeric.

When I am practicing as a naturopathic doctor, I actually prescribe something called Curcumin. Curcumin is a constituent that is found in turmeric and that is what most of the research has been done on in terms of figuring out the benefits of turmeric. Turmeric has many of the same benefits as curcumin so drinking this on a day to day basis can help a lot in terms of decreasing inflammation in the body. Specifically I’ve seen great benefits with the skin, with joint pain, it’s really helpful for decreasing inflammation in the gut, and I’ve also seen great benefit in terms of hormone balancing as well. We know that turmeric helps with estrogen metabolism, so it can be great with balancing hormones if you suffer with PMS or irregular menstrual cycles, heavy bleeding, or breast tenderness. I’m not saying that it’s the only thing that will fix those things, but it certainly can be a helpful tool to help balance hormones.

Let’s start making the latte!

What I’ve done so far is I’ve mixed 1 cup full-fat canned coconut milk and 1 cup of water. The coconut milk I used is an organic, full-fat canned coconut milk. There’s no BPA in the lining which I like about this particular brand. What I do is open the can of coconut milk, pour it into a bowl, and I incorporate the milk part and all the fat part together so that it’s a consistent consistency before I measure out the one cup and add it to the pot.

Into my coconut milk and water mixture I’m going to start to adding my spices.

The first thing I did was took about a tablespoon chunk of ginger, then I grated it down. Next I pressed the ginger between my fingers to release the juice. If this is too much work, because I know there might be some moms thinking “I’m not going to do that, that’s way too much work!” you can also use powdered ginger as well. You can use any brand you’d like but it’s best that it’s a really good spice brand. I use ‘Simply Organic.’

So, I added the ginger to the pot so now we are going to add in the Turmeric. We are going to add 1 heaping teaspoon of ground turmeric. One thing to think about when you’re buying a turmeric powder is to get a good brand. Usually you’ll be able to find better brands from a health food store or from an organic company. There’s a lot of knockoffs and cheaper brands that will dilute turmeric with rice flour so you’re not getting nearly all of the benefits of it. Especially if you’re trying to eat Paleo or grain free you’ll want to be sure you’re getting brand without rice flour. Turmeric should be very pungent, it should be very orange and it should have a nice aroma to it as well. Simply organic is one of those good brands and is my favourite to use.

So add in your turmeric. I have the heat on sort of lowish-medium heat while making my Golden Milk Latte. I don’t want to boil it at all but I do want to keep it warm and keep it moving. Next I’m going to add a heaping ½ teaspoon of cinnamon.

The other thing that you want to think about is that the health benefits of the curcumin in the turmeric are really only bioavailable to your body if you ingest them with fats, which is why use coconut milk as my base. You could also add coconut oil if you want! You always want to make sure you’re consuming turmeric along with a healthy fat. The other thing that makes it more bioavailable is a little bit of black pepper so I always add a little dash of black pepper to my Golden Milk Latte!

So I’ve got my ginger sort of juice in there, my coconut milk, my water, my turmeric, my cinnamon and my black pepper and I’m just going to really whisk the mixture until all my spices are incorporated. You can strain it through a sieve if you want before you pour it in the cups. I personally don’t mind if there’s a few little chunks of spices in it so I just make it simple and leave it like this.

The next step is to sweeten it. I would recommend sweetening it a little bit. The cinnamon obviously adds a little bit of sweetness but it won’t be quite enough. I’m going to add about a tablespoon of honey. This is going to serve about 2 people so it’s about ½ a tablespoon a person. You can use maple syrup if you happen to be vegan, you can use stevia if you want to make it lower carb, if you’re doing a ketogenic diet, you can use stevia.

Now that it is all heated and mixed you could put this in a mason jar and shake it to froth it. I would wear an oven mitt because it’s going to be hot! You could also put it in a blender to froth it, but it can stain your blender! I recommend putting it in a glass mason jar and just shake it. This is a step you don’t need to do but it adds a nice touch!

I also just wanted to remind you that my program, Ignite Your Purpose, starts the second round on January 8th  so if you’re a mom who is interested in learning the fundamentals of health and if you’re a mom who feels low energy, you feel your mental clarity is poor, your focus is poor, you just feel maybe a lack of purpose in your life outside of your roles as a mother, this would be a great fit for you!  The new year is a perfect time to be actively working on your health. You can be learning the fundamentals, implementing the fundamentals, have renewed energy, renewed purpose, and you might even lose a little bit of weight along the way. It’s not necessarily a weight loss program but all the fundamentals that we will be working on include fitness and food, and nourishment and igniting your purpose and all of that could definitely translate into weight loss. I’ve definitely seen small changes add up into huge transformations in my female patients as a naturopathic doctor.

So I’ve got my ginger sort of juice in there, my coconut milk, my water, my turmeric, my cinnamon and my black pepper and I’m just going to really whisk that until all my spices are incorporated. You can strain it through a sieve if you want, before you pour it in the cups, I personally don’t mind if there’s a few little chunks of spices in it so I just make it simple and leave it like this.

Now, you can sweeten it. I would recommend sweetening it a little bit. The cinnamon obviously adds a little bit of sweetness but it won’t be quite enough. So I’m going to add about a tablespoon of honey. This is going to serve about 2 people so it’s about ½ a tablespoon a person. And I just roughly kind of measure that with a spoon. You can use maple syrup if you happen to be vegan, you can use stevia if you want to make it lower carb. You know, if you’re doing a ketogenic diet, you can use stevia. If you’re doing a low carb day you can use stevia. Those are options as well.

So I’m just whisking it up I’m actually going to show you what it looks like.
SO just whisking it, sorry this isn’t a great view.

Alright, so that is how you make a golden milk latte!
So I just wanted to share a couple more things while this is warming up a little bit more.
I wanted to let you know and you may know this already from a previous post, but TAG A FRIEND if you think there is someone else you know that may benefit from this recipe. I will then send you the recipe so if you tag a friend in this post today, or any day that you see the video, I will send you the recipe.

I also just wanted to remind you that my program ,the registration is open! We start November 20th so if you’re a mom who is interested in learning the fundamentals of health,  IF you’re a mom who feels low energy, your mental clarity is poor, your focus is poor, you just feel maybe a lack of purpose in your life outside of your roles as a mother, this would be a great fit for you! I think this a wonderful time of year to start a program. I know a lot of people look at their calendar and think ‘ugh, a 4-week program that start November 20th, goes till December 20th, you know we’re getting right into Christmas, it’s getting waaay too busy I can’t commit to that right now.’ Well, if you think of it from a different perspective, if you think of it from this perspective. What if you went into the holiday season feeling like you were actively working on your health during that time. You were learning the fundamentals, you were implementing the fundamentals, you were going into the holiday season with renewed energy, with renewed purpose, and you might even loose a little bit of weight along the way. It’s not necessarily a weight loss program but all the fundamentals that we will be working on include fitness and food, and nourishment and purpose, igniting that purpose, ,you know all of that could definitely translate into weight loss. I’ve definitely seen small changes add up into huge transformations in my women patients as a naturopathic doctor. So I actually think this is agreat time to start a program. So I do encourage you to sort of consider signing up. I will put the registration link in the comments below. Have a look at it and let me know if you have any questions I am here to answer questions. Don’t forget to tag a friend on this video if you are interested in receiving the recipe.

I think that’s all  I had to say to you, actually, I want to show you what it looks like when I get this into a cup althought I think you may have already seen that on my Instagram and Facebook

So one thing you could do is you could do, and this is on my recipe, is you could put this in a jar, a mason jar, and shake it. I would wear like a hot mitt, and shake it, because it’s going to be hot. You could shake it to froth it, or you could put it in a blender to froth it. If you put it in a blender though it will stain the blender, so I recommend putting it in a glass mason jar and just shake it. I’m just going to use it like this today because I just don’t feel like that extra step, personally, and I think for busy moms the easier the better so this is my favourite mug with my E on it, and I’m just going to pour that in. You get to see the clutter In my house which is great! That’s mom life, right?

Enjoy! See you guys! Have a great weekend!
